I love computers, technology—
Oh yes, I really, really do!
Smartphones and digicams
Swanky tablets and laptops, too.
Social media completely rocks,
Facebook, Twitter, the Internet—
With each passing year
Gadgets and apps get better yet!
I can’t believe how much has changed
Since my bygone college days,
Child of the 70s and the 80s—
Deep in my heart, I’ll be always.
Carpenters, John Denver, ABBA,
And of course, the Bee Gees too—
Phil Collins and Cyndi Lauper—
Nothing the 80s couldn’t do!
Brooke Shields, Shaun Cassidy
The teen heart-throbs way back then,
Love notes written, not in texts
But with paper, ink, and pen.
I remember when a boy
Called me on our landline phone;
My Daddy answered—he got nervous!
Asked for me—a respectful tone.
Ah, those were the days . . .
A man asked in-person for a date;
Without ongoing texts back and forth
Arrived on time, he wasn’t late!
Families survived with just one phone,
Kids were active, played outside—
Backyard swing sets and trampolines,
Hide-and-seek, a bicycle ride!
In some ways I deeply miss
That gentler, slower pace,
Our lives were purposeful, productive—
Without a need to rush and race.
Each generation has its strength
Neither one better than the other—
From Boomers to Millennials
Love father, mother, sister, and brother.
All people are important,
No matter their age or place of birth;
God has fashioned each one of us
For a special mission here on earth.
I think I’ll cling to solid values
And genteel graces from yesteryear;
But let computers improve my world
And lives of those that I hold dear.
